More SL troops to UN peace keeping missions [February 11 2011]

The government has increased the number of soldiers deploying in UN peace keeping missions.

The Cabinet has approved a proposal forward by the External Affairs Minister Prof. G.L. Peiris to sign a Memorandum of Understanding with the United Nations Stand-By Arrangement System (UNSAS) to increase Sri Lanka's participation in UN peacekeeping operations.

The government said after defeating LTTE terrorism in 2009, the military is in a position to expand its contribution in UN peace keeping missions.

Following the defeat of Tamil Tiger separatists in May 2009, Sri Lanka says its Armed Forces and the Police are now in a position to enhance their contribution to the UN Peace keeping Forces to promote international peace.

There are 1,215 men and women attached to the Army, Navy and Air Force has been deployed in UN peace keeping missions.
