Army apprehends 4,260 deserters [February 12 2011]

Sri Lanka Army (SLA), which has commenced rounding up army deserters, has apprehended 4,260 soldiers, including 10 officers.

The SLA had given a nine day grace period starting from Februray 4 for the army deserters to surrender. “ Over 2,080 soldiers and three officers have been surrendered during the given period and the SLA is now processing their details for them to give official clearances, SLA spokesman Maj. Gen. Ubaya Medawela said.

According to the spokesman, those who wish to re-join the Army will be taken back and others who want to leave the SLA will be given official clearances.

However, there are nearly 50,000 army deserters and the SLA has commenced rounding up them.
