Fishermen warned to stay within 200 nautical miles [February 16 2011]

Sri Lankan fishermen have been warned by the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources to stay within 200 nautical mile Sri Lankan maritime boundary line for fishing.

This warning comes after five Sri Lankan fishermen were abducted by the Somali pirates on February 11.

Assistant Director of the Fisheries Department, Lal De Silva said all Sri Lankan fishermen warned about the threat faced by them when crossing international waters.

He said the Ministry was negotiating with the authorities to five fishermen and also two other Sri Lankan fishermen, who have been in Somali custody since last year.
