CGR launches high speed trains from Galle to Matara [February 16 2011]

Sri Lanka Railway (CGR) Department has launched its first high speed train service today. The trains will run at a speed of 100 KMPH between Galle and Matara.

The coastal railway line between Galle and Matara has been fully modernized with the Indian technical and financial assistance.

Director Planning of the CGR Wijaya Samarasinghe said the train speed of 40 KMPH was commenced in 1864. “This is the first time trains ply at the speed of 100 kmph in Sri Lanka after 147 years” he said.

The journey between two stations is 28 minutes.
