SL’s maritime wrecks to be preserved [February 16 2011]

The Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development Ministry is to draw a long term management plan to protect Sri Lanka’s maritime wrecks and underwater cultural heritage.

Cabinet has granted approval for a proposal by Minister Dr. Rajitha Senaratne to work out a plan after a detailed study by the National Aquatic Resources Research and Development Agent (NARA) to manage and preserve maritime wrecks.

“Shipwrecks are considered as the heritage of the nation, representing historical, cultural and archaeological value and very old wrecks are a major attraction for underwater photographers. We need to preserve them well” Minister Senaratne said.
