Indian fishermen to be released; Protest opposite Chennai mission [February 16 2011]

The 112 Indian fishermen arrested last night in Point Pedro will be released soon after official investigation. Minister of Traditional Industries and Small Enterprises, Douglas Devananda who met the arrested, said that the Indian fishermen have accepted their fault and pleaded pardon for fishing in Sri Lankan waters.

The fishermen had tendered an apology and had requested the authorities to facilitate their release. Minister Devananda said India is a friendly neighbouring country and that Sri Lanka will assure protection to the arrested Indian fishermen.

Meanwhile, daughter of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi and Parliamentarian, K. Kanimozhi along with two other members of parliament and over a thousand other protesters were taken into custody by the Chennai Police today. Parliamentarians, D.K.S. Illangaran and J. Anbalahan were also arrested in the incident. They were staging a protest in front of the Sri Lanka Consulate in Chennai at the time of their arrest. The protest comes following the arrest of 112 Indian fishermen last night at Point Pedro after they had allegedly violated the maritime boundaries.
