Serious sea erosion in West Coast [February 16 2011]

Serious sea erosion has been reported from several areas of Western Coast, according to the Coast Conservation Department has reported. Official sources said that the pattern of erosion was unnatural and significant within the history of past 35 years.

The Coastal Conservation Department says that the beaches of Bambalapitiya and Kollupitiya in Colombo city Ratmalana, Wattala, Uswetakeiyawa, Prithipura, Wedikanna in suburbs and the Poruthota beach in Negombo have severely been affected by sea erosion. The Department says that it is placing sand bags as a temporary measure to prevent sea erosion and study the situation before taking a permanent solution.
