The Government has taken steps look after over 5,000 orphans, including those who were abandoned by the LTTE, in the Northern province.

The Governor of the Northern G.A.Chandrasiri said a meeting with GA’s, AGA’s and Probation Officers was held to register all children’s homes in the province under the government and also to appoint district level committees to monitor the children’s welfare in the homes.

He said after defeating the LTTE terrorism in May 2009, the Government forces found children in the various illegal children’s homes run by the LTTE , including the ‘Chencholai’ home, which was totally abandoned by the LTTE.

“ There was no one to take care of the children and people and the LTTE fled the home leaving children”, he said.

There are 54 registered children’s homes and 26 unregistered homes functioning in all the five districts of the Northern province.
