600km roads to be repaired with concrete surfing [March 02 2011]

A stretch of 600km of national highways will be rehabilitated with concrete surfacing through domestic contractors, as it has proved to have a long durability. Rehabilitation of National Highways of ‘A’ and ‘B’ Grades has so far been carried out with bituminous materials which has lesser durability when compared with concrete roads.

Under the concept of Gama Neguma program several rural roads have been rehabilitated during the last five years in all parts of the country. The Government has identified that 6,500 km of national highways which are in unsatisfactory condition needs urgent rehabilitations.It has now been planned to rehabilitate around 600 km of national highways with concrete surfacing through domestic contractors.

This project is to be funded by Road Development Authority and the cabinet has approved the obtaining of a loan USD 500 million from local banks on a Treasury guarantee. Road Development Authority will call for technical proposals from Local contractors registered with ICTAD in Grade C3 and above in the field of highway construction
