Govt targets Rs. 15b on home gardens [March 03 2011]

The government targets to save Rs 15 billion by promoting one million home gardens to grow vegetables and fruits that required by each family.

The Economic Development Minister Basil Rajapaksa said there were more than 1.4 million lands which were less than 40 perch in extent and home gardening projects could be implemented on those lands.

“ This project would not affect the people who are growing vegetables on a mass scale”, he said.

He said each vegetable seed pack contains 250 seeds of five varieties of vegetables such as tomatoes, chilies, beans, ladies fingers and green leaves would be distributed among the families.

Grama Niladhari, Samurdhi Niladhari, Agriculture Development Officer and Midwife of every GN division have been assigned to monitor the progress of this project everyday. Minister Rajapaksa was of the view that this program will increase the daily consumption of vegetables and promote the nutritional level of such families.
