Peterites win U19 rugby Sevens [March 06 2011]

St. Peter’s College kicked off the 2011 inter school rugby season in a spectacular manner as they clinched the Cup Championship at the under 19 seven a side tournament worked off at the Royal College Sports Complex in Reid Avenue today.

The Peterites completed the tournament with a fantastic record and added the finishing touches by defeating Kingswood College Kandy by 24 points to 15 points in the final encounter.

St. Peter’s College dominated the final and ran down four superb tries while converting two of them against their opponent’s three unconverted tries. Skipper Bhanuka Nanayakkara, Sandun Herath, Rasitha Krishan and Dulaj Perera scored a try each for the winners while the latter was successful with two conversions.

In the semifinal St. Peter’s College trounced Wesley College by 31 points 5 points in a completely one sided game while Kingswood College had the better of their home town rivals Trinity College by 14 points to 5 points in the other semifinal.

St. Peter’s College of course had a tough quarterfinal hurdle where they edged out Isipatana College by 12 points to 5 points in an exciting fixture. In contrast Wesley beat Mahanama 31 nil, Kingswood beat Prince of Wales 26 nil and Trinity College beat Dharmaraja College 7 nil.

Meanwhile S. Thomas’ College Mount Lavinia clinched the Plate Championship with a convincing 26 nil victory over Lumbini MV in the final encounter. In the semifinals the Thomians defeated St. Sylvester’s College Kandy 22-12 and Lumbini MV beat Vidyartha College Kandy 24-12.

In the Plate quarterfinals S. Thomas’ beat Ananda 26-7, St. Sylvester’s beat Royal 24-0, Lumbini MV beat St. Aloysius 33-0 and Vidyartha had the better of Thurstan 21-7
