No tsunami threat to SL -DMC [March 12 2011]

The Disaster Management Centre (DMC) said there is no tsunami threat to Sri Lanka.

Assistant Director DMC Pradeep Koddippili said Sri Lanka is equipped with most accurate and advanced earthquake alert and warning systems – Japan Meterological Alerts, Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre (PTWC) and Indian Tsunami Warning Centre.

He said Sri Lanka had no threat of the tsunami that hit Japan.

“ The alerts and warnings on disasters are recorded in DMC and Meteorology Department, which provide round the clock service”, he said.

According to Koddippili the Met Department, which would assess the gravity of the earthquake warnings and would issue the directives to the DMC to alert or evacuate people from the danger zones.
