EPF Reaches Rs.900 billion mark this year   [March 14 2011]

The gross income of the Employees Provident Fund was Rs.121.3 billion, which is 10.6 percent higher compared to that of the preceding year.  By the year 2010, the total value of the Fund has reached Rs.900 billion registering a growth of 16.9 per cent over that of 2009 reveals Central Bank reports.

The member contribution rose by 12.5 per cent and the number of active members of the Fund has increased by 9.5 per cent during the year 2010, thus reflecting an increase in new employment opportunities in Sri Lanka. EPF has received Rs.54.8 billion as contributions from members and has paid Rs.34.9 billion as refunds to the members in 2010. According to Central Bank sources more than 94 per cent of the funds have been invested in Government securities continuing its investment policty of focusing on long-term positive rate of real return to the members, ensuring the safety of the Fund.  EPF has earned Rs.118 billion from its investments in Government securities in 2010.

The Central Bank also reports that the EPF has been able to appropriate an attractive interest rate of 12.5 per cent on the year-end member balances, under the prevailing low interest rate environment.  During the year 2011, the total value of the Fund is expected to surpass Rs.1,000 billion (Rs.1 trillion) mark through its income from investments and member contritutions.
