A program to distribute energy saving high quality CFL and LED labeled bulbs for 4.2 million electricity consumers in the country will be launched by the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) under the `Lighting Sri Lanka’ program.

Power and Energy Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka said that unlike other normal bulbs, CFL and LED bulbs save energy to a greater extent and the CEB decided to distribute these bulbs to consumers at a low cost.

“As a special relief to consumers, we have decided to deduct the cost of the bulbs, obtain by each family from their monthly electricity bills.

Minister Ranawaka said at least 30 percent electricity consumers who are not in a sound financial position will greatly benefit this scheme since these bulbs are sold at exorbitant prices in the open market.
