Elections to the local government bodies which did not have polls last Thursday, will have to do so before mid June. Elections Department sources today said that all postponed local government elections will be held by the end of May or the beginning of June.
The Election Department is awaiting lawsuits filed by political parties and the independent groups regarding rejection of nominations will be heard and verdicts be delivered soon. Elections 234 local government bodies were held last Thursday while elections of another 65 local government bodies were postponed due to several election petitions.
Two more local government institutes in the Mullaitivu district were not ready for elections since the demining operations were still in progress. Apart from the above 65 LG bodies, elections to another 35 local government institutes were postponed due to ongoing ICC World Cup will now be held after the tournament ends early next month. .
