Lanka donates US $ one m to Japan [March 22 2011]

External Affairs Minister Prof. G.L. Peiris told the Parliament the Government has pledged a donation of US$ one million for the relief and recovery efforts that are currently underway in Japan.

The Minister making a special statement in parliament said the cheque of US$ one million will be handed over by Treasury Secretary Dr. P.B. Jayasundera to the Japanese Ambassador today.

The Government has also offered to despatch a team of medical professionals to help care for those who have been affected by the disaster along with a search and rescue team comprising armed forces personnel who are trained and equipped for this purpose. If it is necessary, the government will further provide its assistance to the people of Japan, the Minister Peiris said.
