UNP crisis: Secret vote, if no Dep. Leader found [March 23 2011]

The Working Committee meeting of the UNP is to hold a secret vote, if the Committee fails to appoint a Deputy Leader, to solve the leadership issues of the party, today.

UNP spokesman Gayantha Karunatilake said the meeting will be held for the third day today at the ‘Sirikotha’, Party Headquarters and would hold the secret vote, if they failed to appoint a deputy leader, according to the party Constitution.

He said a proposal was moved by UNP Chairman , Gamini Jayawickrama Perera, General Secretary Tissa Attanayake and Kabir Hashim to create another Deputy Leaders Post in the party to accommodate Sajith Premadasa yesterday.

At the meeting Premadasa said he wanted 48 hours to arrive at a decision for which the party hierarchy objected.

But, only 24 hours were granted for him to decide.

“ Unless a consensual decision is arrived at this evening. The party will immediately go for an election to elect a leader by a secret vote, he said.
