Duleep, new Chairman of Selectors? [April 09 2011]

Former Sri Lanka captain Duleep Mendis is set to be appointed the new Chairman of Selectors following the resignation of Aravinda de Silva after Sri Lanka’s World Cup final debacle.

58 -year-old Mendis had previously served as the Chairman of Selectors on a couple of occasions before Ashantha de Mel. The former hard-hitting middle order batsman had represented Sri Lanka in 24 Tests scoring four centuries and eight fifties, including that famous twin hundreds during Sri Lanka's one-off Test against India in Chennai in 1982. A product of S.Thomas’ College, Mt. Lavinia, Mendis has played for Sri Lanka in 79 one day internationals scoring seven half centuries.

Sri Lanka Cricket has recommended five other names of which four would be picked to be included in the five-member new selection committee headed by Mendis. They are Brendon Kuruppu, Ranjith Madhurasinghe, Chaminda Mendis, Vinodhan John and Don Arunasiri.

Though Aravinda De Silva and his selection committee resigned after selection controversies for the World Cup, their official term was to be ended on April 30.
