Eight percent in NW are Thalassaemia carriers [May 05 2011]

Blood testing program for thalassaemia conducted in the Northwestern Province has revealed eight percent out of the 72,900 persons screened so far are carriers for the disease.

The program is conducted under the National Centre for Thalassaemia in Kurunegala. On an average around 200 youth come to the National Centre, daily for blood screening tests to ensure that they are non-carriers, Medical officer in Charge of the Centre Dr. Ashok Perera said.
