Lanka to import 3,000 cows [May 05 2011]

Livestock Ministry will import 3,000 dairy cows from India shortly to meet the market demand for dairy milk, Deputy Minister H.R. Mithrapala said.

He said that another set of 3,000 dairy cows would be imported from Australia at a cost of Rs. 92 million.

According to Deputy Minister over 100,000 cattle perished in the Eastern Province due to recent floods caused by heavy rains and it resulted in deline in dairy production by 15 per cent.
