Gas-filled shotguns to scare off elephants [May 13 2011]

The Coconut Development Ministry has taken steps to provide gas-filled-shot-guns to farmers in areas which have trespassing wild lephants, Ministry sources said. A large number of crops including coconut trees are being destroyed daily in various parts of the country including the North and the East.

As wild elephants regularly destroy their cultivations, farmers give up cultivation mid way. Considering this situation, the Ministry has decided to distribute gas-filled shotguns to farmers to protect their cultivations from wild animals and to promote their living standards, the Ministry sources said.

The gas-filled guns won’t harm the elephants, but would only frighten them off.
