CEA launches a new waste management project for Wayamba [May 14 2011]

The Central environment Authority (CEA) has lauched a special solid waste management programe under the Pilisaru Project to strengthen Local Authorities in North Western Province to regularize solid waste management.

An awareness programe for local authority officers in puttlam district was also held. The CEA as the main regulatory institute for environment in Sri Lanka is involving Solid waste management which is becoming one of the main problems in urban context. CEA is involving Planning and Designing waste management projects for local authorities, giving technical and financial support for local authorities through “Pilisaru” National Solid waste management project and Post consumer plastic waste management project which are two separate projects operating under the purview of CEA.

Solid waste management was introduced to local authorities in Putlam district recently according to the concept of Hon. Anura priyadarshana yapa, Minister of Environment.

Charitha Herath Chairman of CEA said that Pilisaru National Solid Waste Management project is giving solution for every local authority and make waste a resource which can marketable.

According to Herath, Pilisaru has given support for more than 80 local authorities to find sustainable solutions for solid waste problem further he says.
