Minister of Media and Information Keheliya Rambukwella has said that President Mahinda Rajapakse took measures directly to safeguard the country’s sovereignty in the past few years.

Addressing a ceremony in Kandy the Minister said that the humanitarian operation was commenced with the determination that terrorism must be eliminated for sustainable peace in the country at a time when tiger terrorists displayed their barbaric nature to the world by closing the Marvilaru sluice gate, denying water to farmers for cultivation and even for drinking purpose.

The Minister has pointed out that freedom was dawned upon the entire nation two years ago as a result of this humanitarian operation. The Minister further said that although the government headed by President Mahinda Rajapakse which came into power in 2005, acted to resolve the problems through discussions, the LTTE responded to these initiatives through brutality.
