Rugby – Trinity humble defending champs St,Peter’s [May 20 2011]

Trinity College Kandy brought an end to the defending champions St. Peter’s unbeaten record this season when they pulled off a sensational 34 points to 10 points victory in their Singer inter school under 20 Division One League rugby tournament match worked off at Bambalapitiya today.

The Trinitians despite performing away from home got their act together well from the kick off and went on to collect their points from two goals and four tries after having snatched a close 12-10 lead at half time. The Peterites after an unbeaten run last year and with five successivevictories this season finally met their Waterloo as they were completely outplayed and managed to score just two unconverted tries.

In fact Trinity College virtually had their own in the second half with a tremendous performance where they added a further 22 points to their tally

in the form of one goal and three tries while conceding none. The match was almost even after 60 minutes of play with Trinity College building up a 17-10 lead with an additional try shortly after the interval. However thereafter the game turned into a one sided contest with a fierce late rally from the visitors.

Trinity College really showed their class during the last ten minutes of play while crossing their opponent’s goal line on three occasions to complete a convincing victory at the end. They also avenged their last year’s 10-31 defeat against St. Peter’s at Pallekele.

Winger Mohamed Shehan had a splendid game for the Trinitians with three tries while prop forward Bhasu Karunatilleke, fly half Rehan Weerakoon and winger Thisila Karunatilleke scored a try each. Centre three quarter Sandun Herath and number eight Isuru Alwis scored a try each for St. Peter’s College.
