Plans are afoot to dig trench in addition to the electricity fence in Meegalewa area to prevent the trespass of wild elephants into the villages, Agriculture and Wildlife Minister S.M. Chandrasena said.

He said that Rs. 7 million will be spent for this project. Six kilo metre long trench has been dug so far, according to Minister Chandrasena.

A survey conducted in Meegalewa area 15 years before had revealed that there were 3000 wild elephants in this area. this number has gone up to 7000 now. It could be the main cause for the trespass of wild elephants into the villages, Chandrasena added.
