Three people, including two students, were drowned in the Mahaweli River near Katuwanwila area in Welikanda today. The two students and their hostel warden from an Arabic College in Oddamavadi, Batticaloa were in a 52-member group who were making an educational tour.
The group had stopped at Katuwanwila, a village in Polonnaruwa District border, for quick bath before reaching their final destination Polonnaruwa on a day trip. The rest of the students in the group too had been bathing in the river when two of their fellow students and the warden had been dragged away.
