Minister: Train compartment first a sabotage [July 24 2011]

Transport Minister Kumara Welgama today claimed that the fire which destroyed train compartments in Kandy as an act of sabotage. The recent fire which erupted in four compartments of a train in the Kandy Railway Station was an organised act of sabotage, accprding to the Minister.

Four compartments of a train halted at the Kandy Railway Station caught fire on July 22 completely destroying two of the compartments. Addressing media during an inspection tour to the site, the Minister claimed that it is impossible for two complete train compartment to be engulfed in flames and destroyed, just 10 minutes after smoke is seen rising. The two compartments were set on fire after being doused with petrol, he accused. He added that investigations on the incident is presently underway and that the Railways General manager has been instructed to submit an inquiry report within two days.
