13 Lankan fishmen taken into custody [July 26 2011]

Thirteen Sri Lankan fishermen were held by the Indian Coast Guard today after allegedly entering the Paradip area illegally off Orissa, located on the east coast of India.

“Coast Guard ship Saranga intercepted the trawlers after spotting them during routine patrolling and handed over the 13 fishermen on board to the marine police here,” in-charge of Paradip marine police station, Tejraj Patel said.

The fishermen, who hail from Sri Lanka, have been taken into custody and are being interrogated, he said.

Their three trawlers, containing a large quantity of fish, are being examined thoroughly by immigration and customs officials as well as police, he said.
