Over 50,000 acres of land have come under the plough in this Yala Season in the Batticaloa District, according to R. Harihanan Assistant Director, District Agriculture Department.

He said this shows an increase after this years floods. The paddy harvest has also gone up by a considerable level.

Additional paddy lands have been used for paddy cultivation in Kokkatticholai, Vavunativu, Wellaveli and Vakarai areas. The subsidised fertilizer distribution to farmers was the main reason for the increase of the harvest in the district, Hariharan said.
