TNA suspends talks with Govt [August 05 2011]

The Tamil National alliance (TNA), which commenced talks with the government in January 2011, has decided to suspend its dialogue with the government and laid down three conditions to look into within 10-days to resume talks.

The party issuing a statement said the TNA hopes the government respond to their three issues - the structure of governance, the subjects and functions allocated to the central government and the provincial councils and issues pertaining to fiscal and financial devolution.

The statement states that the 10 rounds of talks were held from 10th January 2011 on the evolution of an acceptable political solution and in regard to matters of immediate concern of the Tamil people. The TNA raised the following matters of immediate concern:

Resettlement and Rehabilitation of the Internally Displaced Persons, removal of High Security Zones, disarming the para-military forces operating in the North and East and the issue of the political prisoners and detainees.
