DLWC goes ahead with its jumbo census [August 11 2011]

Despite protests by the environmentalists, the government is to go ahead with the country’s first ever census on elephants.

Director General Department of Wildlife Conservation H.D Ratnayake told the Sunday Observer that the Department will continue with the census, which covers the entire island for the time in its history.

“ This survey is vital for the elephant conservation plan of the department to decide the mean of managing the country’s elephant population”, he said.
