Welfare measures to promote fishing industry [August 11 2011]

The Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development Ministry with a view of uplifting the living standards of the Northern fishermen has implemented various welfare programs in the North, the Ministry sources said.

In this way Rs. 150,000 worth 75,000 fingerlings were released to the Udayarkattu reservoir in the Puthukudiyiruppu Divisional Secretariat Division.

Rupees 1 million worth 20 fishing boats and fishing nets were also distributed among the fishermen in the area.

The Ministry sources expressed confidence that such activities would help achieve the Government's goal of increasing the fish harvest in the North to 50 percent within the coming two years.
