Trial of the elephant survey begins [August 11 2011]

A trial of the elephant census is now on in over 1,500 locations, which were identified as best spots to count the elephants for the country’s first islandwide census.

Director General Department of Wildlife Conservation told the Sunday Observer that today’s count will be a preparedness for the main census which begins tomorrow.

He said they have selected the locations frequented by the elephants. “ The intention of the census is to have a well establish data base about Sri Lanka’s elephant population. We will count the number fo elephants in Sri Lanka, including the number of males and females, babies, adults, tuskers. We will observe their behavior, food pattern, breeding pattern and all other information with regard to elephants in the country”, he said.
