UN mulls support in reconciliation [August 18 2011]

The UN would increasingly look for opportunities to support the government in promoting reconciliation which it believes is the key to ensuring lasting and durable peace, the UN Humanitarian Coordinator for Sri Lanka Subinay Nandy said in a statement.

Making a statement ahead of the World Humanitarian Day which will be celebrated tomorrow (August 19), he said the World Humanitarian Day gives the UN the opportunity to reflect on the achievements of the past including the broad partnerships in support of Sri Lankan national humanitarian efforts,

Speaking of the key milestones in the humanitarian effort in Sri Lanka including the raising of US $24 million in addition to the government assistance for over 1.2 million flood victims he said the UN had provided humanitarian assistance to the conflict affected North where the immediate needs of close upon 300,000 IDPs were provided for. Humanitarian partners also worked alongside the government to support a dignified return process.
