Kiplagat takes the first gold [August 27 2011]

DAEGU, Aug 27. - Kenya underlined its long distance supremacy in the very first event of the IAAF World Championships here today by making a clean sweep in the women's marathon worked off this morning.

Winning the first gold medal of the Daegu 2011 World Championship was Edna Ngeringwony Kiplagat who clocked two hours, 28 minutes and 43 seconds to secure the firt place in the marathon worked off under ideal weather condition today,

There was a tense battle for the silver and the bronze medal Kiplagat's Kenyan compatriots Priscah Jeptoo (2:29:00) and Sharon Jemutai Cherop (2:29:14) secured the seond and third places after a keenly contested tussle.

But Bezunesh Bekele of Ethiopia (2:29:21) made a desparate attempt to stop the Kenyan dominance but she finally had to settle for the fourth place, finishing a mere 0.07 seconds behind the bronze medallist.
