Eight months RI for sexual harassment [September 12 2011]

Colombo Fort Magistrate today imposed an eight-month rigorous imprisonment suspended for seven years for a man who pleaded guilty for sexually harassing a Japanese woman in a private bus at Union Place, Colombo.

Colombo Fort Magistrate, Lanka Jayaratne further imposed a fine of Rs.1,500 and also ordered Police to obtain his finger print. The accused - Abdul Amanullah of Narammala was produced before the Magistrate and his lawyer Kingsley Hettiarachchi told the Court that his client was pleading guilty to all charges therefore and requested a lenient punishment.

Earlier last week, the woman from Kamma-achi, Japan complained to the Slave Island Police that a person who sat near her in the bus had sexually harassed her, touching her in an inappropriate manner. It was later disclosed that the accused had committed the offence under the influence of alcohol.
