Sri Lanka holds Australia to rain-hit draw [September 12 2011]

Weather gods came to Sri Lanka as the hosts managed to hold Australia to a draw in their rain-hit second Test which concluded at Pallekele International Stadium, Kandy today.

Training by 237 runs on the first innings, Sri Lanka were struggling at 317 for 6 in the second essay when the weather gods came to the home teams rescues. When the play was finally called off, Sri Lanka had an overall lead of only 80 runs with four second innings wickets in hand. Australia takes an unbeatable 1-0 lead in the three-Test series with the third and final Test due to commence at SSC grounds, Colombo on Saturday.

Chief scores: Sri Lanka first innings: 174 all out (Angelo Mathews 58, Kumar Sangakkara 48) and second innings 317 for 6 at stumps (Tharanga Paranavithana 55, Kumar Sangakkara 69, Mahela Jayawardene 51, Thilan Samaraweera 43, Ryan Harris 3 for 54).
