Water, sanitation project in North [September 15 2011]

The Government is implementing a massive water supply and sanitation project in Jaffna and Kilinochchi at a cost of Rs. 17,880 million (US$ 164.4 million). The Asian Development Bank (ADB) will provide around Rs 10 billion (US $ 90 million) for the project.

This project is implemented under the Uthuru Wasanthaya program, to provide safe drinking water for people in the Jaffna and Kilinochchi districts.

Accordingly, US$ 92.55 million will be spent for water supply while US$ 35.64 million and US$ 10.63 million will be spent for sewerage and sanitation facilities and the Iranamadu reservoir improvement respectively.

A sum of US$ 2.64 million for Jaffna water resource management, US$ 5.58 million for capacity building, US$ 11.67 million for contingencies and US$ 5.33 million for financing charges during implementation will be spent.

US$ 90 million of this project will be funded by the ADB while Agency for Francaise de Development and the Sri Lanka Government is funding US$ 48 million and US$ 34.04 million respectively.
