Dumbara Rock frog under threats [October 21 2011]

The Environment Conservation Trust requests the Department of Forest Conservation (DFC) to halt the project to construct the tourist information center at Pitawala Pathana, in Dumbara in the Knuckles range as it destroys the Kirthisinghe’s rock frog (Nannophrys mamorata).

Environmentalist of the ECT Sajeewa Chamikara said Kirthisinghe’s rock frog was listed as Critically Endangered in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.

"Our current observations show that the rock frogs’ habitat in the Pitawala Pathana area has greatly reduced. In fact many rocky areas where the frog lives in have been flattened by certain individuals to make way to tourists traveling over grassland areas, seriously threatening the lives of these animals," he said.
