UPFA takes control of 84.16% of LG bodies [October 10 2011]

The ruling UPFA, with the latest round of election victory, has now secured power in a total of 271 Local Government bodies out of 322 LG bodies for which elections were held in three stages in April, July and October this year.

Having won 21 out of 23 LG bodies in Saturday’s last stage of elections, the UPFA strengthened its grip, having already won 250 out of 299 LG bodies in the first two rounds. On  the completion of elections to all Local Government bodies in the country, the UPFA has taken control of 84.16% of total LG bodies.

The main Opposition, the UNP managed to secure power in only 10 LG bodies to enjoy only 3.10%, the party’s worst ever performance in the 58-year-old Local Government election history of Sri Lanka. The UNP lost its stronghold of Nuwara Eliya Municipal Council after 58 years at last Saturday’s elections. The TNA won 12 LG bodies but JVP failed to secure power in a single LG body.
