Daily fine of Rs. 1000 for unauthorized coastal constructions [October 25 2011]  

Sri Lankas Coast Conservation Department has announced that action is to initiated to fine the owners of unauthorized buildings on the islands coastal areas on a daily basis, untill they remove those buildings.  Accordingly Rs.1000 per day will be fined from the owners maintaining illegal buildings in the coastal areas.  

Director General of the Coast Conservation Department Anil Premaratne  said that approval has been granted  to take action under the amended Coast Conservation Act.  

The Director General stated that although no warrants have been issued yet on any of the owners maintaining illegal buildings in the coastal areas, complaints will be lodged against them in accordance with the amended act. If people maintain illegal buildings despite complains being lodged, a fine of 1000 rupees will be charged per day from such people until the conclusion of the court case, he added.  

Sri Lankas coastal zone contributes 40 percent to the national GDP and is pivotal for economic development.
