Lankan maid acquitted of theft [November 16 2011]

A Sri Lankan housemaid, who was accused of theft by her Bahraini sponsor, was yesterday acquitted by the High Criminal Court. The 40-year-old had run away and gone to the police station, complaining that her sponsor always treated her badly.

However, the female sponsor, 52, told the police that the maid stole some clothes, three call cards and two biscuits.

When the maid was asked by the police about the clothes in her possession, she claimed that her sponsor gave it to her as a present, according to court documents.

She said that the biscuits she took to eat were to break her fast in Ramadan. - Gulf Daily News
