Lankan  maid held for stealing Dhs128,000, 3 phones [December 06 2011]

A Sri Lankan maid, identified as RD, 25, was referred to the Dubai Criminal Court on Monday for allegedly stealing Dhs128,000 in addition to three mobile phones, belonging to her female Emirati sponsor, a school director.

Prosecution records show that the alleged theft took place on Oct.20 while RD was working at her sponsor’s apartment in Hatta.

The Emirati sponsor, known as SK, 44, said that on Oct.20 at around 6:40am she opened her safe and found that Dhs128,000 had been stolen. She said that after confronting the maid, she admitted to the theft of the money and the three mobile phones.

Through investigations it was revealed that the suspect used the absence of the family to commit the theft. On initial questioning, “RD denied any connection with the thefts. However, after a female police personnel searched her, Dhs1,520 under her clothes along with two Nokia mobile phones were found,” said First Corporal Ahmad.

The police reportedly recovered another Dhs3, 200, telephone cards worth Dhs500 and outgoing balance receipts to Sri Lanka from the suspect’s hand bag. During police investigation, RD reportedly confessed to stealing “Dhs28,000 only.”

Also RD allegedly told prosecutors that her Ethiopian accomplice — a maid in the neighbourhood- was the one tasked with carrying the stolen belongings to another Indian accomplice to transfer them to Sri Lanka. The case was deferred to Monday. - Gulf Today
