Unregistered mobile phones to be banned [January 19 2013]

The Telecommunication Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka (TRC) will ban imported mobile phones that are not registered with the TRC. Accordingly, modern equipment will be used to identify unregistered mobile phones which would be removed from use.

The TRC has said that all imported mobile phones should be registered and are also required to meet safety regulations.

The Commission will block signals to unregistered phones. The TRC will maintain a Central Equipment Identity Register and all phones which fail to register will be disabled.
