Three new low cost power plants [March 23 2013]

Action has been taken to construct three low cost generation plants this year, said Power and Energy Minister Pavithradevi Wanniarachchi at a discussion had with CEB Deputy General Manager at the Ministry.

The II & III stages of the Puttalam Lakvijaya plant 600 MW, Sampur power house - 500 MW and Athuruwella eco-friendly power house - 500 MW will be added to the national grid. In addition, to supplement the national grid 35 MW from Moragalla Power Plants would be produced.

The government increased a subsidy to Rs. 73 billion to provide cheaper electricity to low-income families, the Govt incurs a subsidy of Rs. 43.51 billion while the subsidized electricity to sustain the industrial sector amounts to Rs. 35 billion.
