Met dept warns on fishing and Naval activities [May 12 2013]

The Department of Meteorology today warned naval and fishing communities to keep away from rough seas off East coast as strong winds and rough conditions are expected due Cyclonic Storm Mahasen in the South-east Bay of Bengal.

Cyclonic Storm Mahasen is centered about 700km to the East of Mullaitivu and is expected to intensify further and will most likely to move North-westward direction. Hence, sea areas off the coast extending from Jaffna to Hambantota via Batticaloa, will experience strong winds at a speed of over 70kmph, rough conditions and intermittent rain, the Met. Department said. Strong 40kmph South-westerly winds could be expected over Sri Lanka and neighborhood as a result.

Showers will occur at times in the Western, Sabaragamuwa and Central provinces and Galle and Matara districts. Showers or thundershowers can be expected in Northern and Eastern parts of the country during next few days.
