12 policemen injured in Sabaragamuwa student protest [June 01 2013]

The police fired tear gas to disperse a group of protesting undergraduate students of the University of Sabaragamuwa who behaved in an unruly manner injuring 12 policemen, the police spokesman said.

The students blocked the Badulla – Colombo main road in Pambahinaa junction for several hours obstructing the flow of traffic including three ambulances carrying patients.

The police reportedly requested the students to make way at least for the ambulances which one of them was carrying a child in a critical condition. But the strikers had started attacking the police with stones forcing them to fire tear gas.

Six students had been taken into custody in connection with the unruly behaviour and two other students who were involved in a hunger strike had been admitted to Balangoda Hospital.

The protest was started yesterday when four suspended students launched a hunger strike in Pambahinna Junction.
