Abandoned gem mines to be filled up June 08 2013]

The Ministry of Environment will take action to fill up all abandoned gem mines remaining in the country to fight the dengue menace.

With the ground water accumulation during the rainy seasons, these open pit mines have contributed to the spread of dengue. There is also a danger of children and animals falling into them.

Inaugurating the program in Kuruwita Environment Minister Susil Premjyantha said that the Ministry is taking immediate action to fill up all abandoned gem mines in the country.
