Chinese woman nabbed for smuggling gems [August 16 2013]

A Chinese woman who attempted to smuggle a stock of precious stones worth up to Rs.4million out of the country was arrested by the Customs at the Banadaranaike International Airport this morning. The woman was searched on suspicion and found over 39 varieties of gems weighing over a kilogram carefully hidden in her bag, Customs Spokesman Superintendent Leslie Gamini said. She was reportedly bound for Beijing and had visited the country four times before. Customs is conducting inquiries to see whether the suspect had smuggled valuables during her previous visists.
