New machinery to improve Colombo city [August 26 2013]

Sri Lanka has acquired Rs. 500 million worth new machinery and equipment for the infrastructure development taking place in Colombo under the Metro Colombo Urban Development Project.

The new heavy machinery and equipment obtained with a World Bank concessionary loan were ceremonially handed over to the Sri Lanka Land Reclamation and Development Corporation by Economic Development Minister Basil Rajapaksa. This is a vital move and a step forward for the Corporation, as most of the machinery were hired from outside sources at a high cost.

The Metro Colombo Urban Development Project, implemented by the Ministry of Defence and Urban Development, aims at reducing floods while improving necessary infrastructure and services in the Metro Colombo Region. Secretary to the Ministry of Defence and Urban Development Gotabaya Rajapaksa and the Country Director of the World Bank were also present.
